Vitamin C

What vitamin C is for and how much a daily dose contains

There are plenty of promises about vitamin C. This article sticks to what a manufacturer may say about it under the EU list of authorised claims. We go through the six vitamin C claims we use, explain the 80 mg nutrient reference value and show how to read the dose on the label.

What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C, chemically L-ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. The human body cannot make it, so we get it from food, mainly from fruit and vegetables. In the ingredients of food supplements you will find it as vitamin C, L-ascorbic acid or as part of a named blend, at Naturlabs the LipoCellTech™ blend.

Why may manufacturers use only authorised claims?

Health claims on foods and food supplements are governed by Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. Only an authorised claim may be used, and only if its conditions of use are met. Claims are authorised by the European Commission after a scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The list of authorised claims is set out in Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012 and its later amendments.

Each claim has its own wording and conditions of use in the list. For vitamin C, the daily dose must contain a significant amount of vitamin C, that is at least 15% of the nutrient reference value. Any other wording must not change the meaning of the claim, which is why Naturlabs uses the exact wording from the list.

Which vitamin C claims do we use?

For products containing vitamin C, we use six claims from the EU list. The table shows them in full, next to the area they relate to.

Vitamin C claims used on Naturlabs products
AreaAuthorised claim wording
Immune systemVitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Tiredness and fatigueVitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Energy-yielding metabolismVitamin C contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
SkinVitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin.
Cell protectionVitamin C contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
Psychological functionVitamin C contributes to normal psychological function.

Wording as in Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012. The EU list contains 15 authorised claims for vitamin C in total. You will find the full wording with the conditions of use in the EU Register.

What does the 80 mg nutrient reference value mean?

The nutrient reference value (NRV) for vitamin C under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 is 80 mg. It is a guide value for food labelling, against which the vitamin C content of the daily dose of a product is compared. Naturlabs Vitamin C contains 500 mg of vitamin C in 2 capsules. That is 625% NRV, because 500 mg is 6.25 times 80 mg.

A higher % NRV does not mean that the product does more. The claims apply to vitamin C present in a significant amount, and their wording does not change with the dose. You also get vitamin C from your diet, from fruit and vegetables. Besides the NRV used for food labelling, EFSA also publishes its own dietary reference values for different population groups. If you are not sure what intake is right for you, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

Figures from the labels. Vitamin C and Skin. contain vitamin C in the LipoCellTech™ blend, the multivitamin as L-ascorbic acid.

If you combine several products, add up the vitamin C from all of them. For example, Vitamin C and Skin. together provide 620 mg of vitamin C a day. Stick to the recommended daily dose of each product.

Products with vitamin C

Why does Skin. contain vitamin C as well as hyaluronic acid?

Skin. combines 150 mg of hyaluronic acid with 120 mg of vitamin C in one capsule. The claim for this product belongs to vitamin C. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. Hyaluronic acid has no authorised health claim in the EU list and no set nutrient reference value, so we do not state any effect for it. The label shows only its amount.

How do you tell an authorised claim from an advertising promise?

An authorised claim names the nutrient and describes what it contributes to, for example: Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system. It does not promise a cure, protection against disease or a fast effect. Under EU law, a food supplement must not claim to prevent, treat or cure a disease.

When you see a general word such as immunity or energy on a product, look next to it for the claim stating which nutrient it refers to. Without that claim, the general word on its own says nothing.

When and how should you take vitamin C?

Naturlabs Vitamin C is taken as 2 capsules daily, and a pack lasts 30 days. Choose the time to suit your routine. In the Rituals you will find it in both Daily basics and Active day. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. The product is not intended for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women unless advised by a doctor. You can read more about the liposomal ingredient in the article What the liposomal form of a vitamin means.

Frequently asked questions

What is vitamin C for?

The EU list of authorised health claims includes 15 claims for vitamin C. For example: Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. The claims may be used only if the daily dose contains a significant amount of vitamin C, at least 15% NRV.

How much vitamin C a day?

The nutrient reference value of 80 mg is used for food labelling and is not a personal recommendation for daily intake. Naturlabs Vitamin C contains 500 mg in 2 capsules, which is the recommended daily dose of this product. Skin. contains 120 mg in one capsule. You also get vitamin C from your diet. If you are not sure what intake is right for you, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

Why does the label say 625% NRV?

The % NRV shows the ratio between the vitamin C content of the daily dose and the nutrient reference value of 80 mg. Naturlabs Vitamin C contains 500 mg in 2 capsules, which is 6.25 times the reference value, so 625%. The figure is mandatory and helps you compare products. It does not mean that a higher percentage does more.

Is liposomal vitamin C a different vitamin C?

Not in terms of health claims. The claims relate to vitamin C and its amount, not to the form of the ingredient. In Naturlabs Vitamin C, the vitamin C is part of the liposomal LipoCellTech™ blend. The EU list of authorised claims contains no claim about a greater effect of the liposomal form. When choosing, compare the amount of vitamin C per daily dose.
